“We no longer depend on our husbands' pockets; this independence changes everything.”

Julieta Lekiale

Member, Community Land Management Committee (CLMC) | Nkaroni Community | Samburu County, Kenya
From Sidelines to Central Figures
Before the Community Land Act, women were not involved in land registration. Men were the only ones registering land, and if a husband died, they would elect the first- or second-born boy, but not the ladies.
Empowering Women Through Land Management

Now, as a lady, I’m elected as a CLMC member, representing women in our community. We can register all women, even if they have children but are unmarried. IMPACT has opened our eyes and made us aware of our importance in land management through training and community outreach.

Economic Independence and Leadership

Through IMPACT, I have had the opportunity to travel to Tanzania and Namibia to learn about land management and environmental stewardship. I’ve seen how women are actively involved in various roles and activities. Back home, I’m now engaged in business, running a small shop and trading livestock. We no longer depend on our husbands’ pockets; this independence changes everything.

Inspiring the Next Generation

It’s important for young women to see women like me in leadership roles. We encourage them to join women’s groups, start projects, and contribute to their communities. Men are also supportive, asking me to help their wives start businesses. We emphasize the importance of educating girls and showcasing successful women in various fields to inspire the next generation.
