Member of NASILA | Laikipia County, Kenya
I am a member of NASILA, which stands for Nomads Advancement for Sustainable Intervention of Livestock and Agribusiness. In the Maa dialect, NASILA means “pure” or “tested.” Each member must have a half-acre of land at their homestead to qualify for the project.
We started the project in 2015 to cultivate every corner of the land. Due to conflicts with elephants and the difficulty of fencing each household, we decided to come together and farm in a communal field, enhancing safety and efficiency.
The basic idea is that there is a lifestyle change. The community has been conserving the forest, wildlife, and land. However, as life changes and the population grows, there is a threat of pressure on the forest and rangeland. The project strives to balance conservation and livelihood by cultivating food and safeguarding the forest, aided by IMPACT’s support with solutions like electric fencing to mitigate wildlife conflict.
A minimum of five people per household will plant trees from the nursery in their portion of the garden and at their homestead. With nearly 200 individuals across about 42 households, community members contribute to greening their environment by planting trees in shared gardens and homesteads, fostering a sustainable future. We are also proposing a resolution that every member living near the forest boundary must plant 50 trees annually to continue conserving the forest.
We’re diversifying our crops with nutritious grasses and leveraging technology, like tractors, to enhance cultivation. We are grateful to IMPACT for their support, which has allowed us to continue our community development work.
