Sustainable Livelihoods and Ecosystems

Strengthening Community Institutions, Empowering Women
IMPACT enhances economic resilience through diversified, sustainable livelihoods that empower women. Our work promotes Indigenous stewardship of natural resources and strengthens community institutions for adaptation and thriving ecosystems.

“IMPACT is truly everyone’s best friend in the county and pastoral communities.”

The Challenge

Declining Community Institutions Undermine Resilience

Over time, the decline of community institutions has posed a significant obstacle to Indigenous peoples managing the natural resources underpinning their livelihoods and ecosystems.

Our Solution

We translate aspirations into action through sustainable livelihood and economic empowerment initiatives that strengthen community institutions and promote resilient ecosystems.

Our approach encompasses five main areas:

Exploring Alternative Livelihoods
Promoting Eco-Friendly Enterprises
Supporting pastoralism as a viable economic activity
Uplifting Adaptive Resource Management Institutions
  • Natural resource inventories and land use planning
  • Resource governance capacity building for sustainable ecosystem management
Enhancing Climate Resilience and Economic Empowerment
  • Focusing on empowering women

Twala Women Group

Empowering Eco-Incomes

Twenty beehives and financial literacy training from IMPACT enabled six women’s groups to manage honey products effectively. Their newfound skills in sustainable beekeeping generated eco-friendly incomes while raising environmental awareness.

The Twala Women Group’s achievement is a model for community-driven initiatives that uplift lives and protect nature.

IMPACT in Action

Naatum Women Group—Incorporated Beekeeping for Ecosystem-Friendly Livelihoods
The Naatum Women have adopted beekeeping, which provides them with a sustainable income and aids in pollinating local flora. It enhances the surrounding ecosystem’s resilience and is a viable livelihood alternative, aligning with our commitment to eco-stewardship.
Naishu Disability Group—Fostering Economic Inclusion
This group in Laikipia received 45 chickens and feed from IMPACT, enabling them to run a poultry project on donated land, gain financial independence, and contribute to sustainable land use practices.
Osugoroi Self-Help Group—Collective Growth and Economic Sustainability
IMPACT’s guidance on beekeeping and poultry care strengthened this self-help group’s community savings, land acquisition, and livelihood diversification. These initiatives also benefited the local ecosystem, demonstrating how the group’s sustainable land management practices harmonize with environmental stewardship.

“IMPACT advised us to rear poultry and donated chickens and trained us in market strategies. Poultry appealed to us more than dairy cows, especially considering the drought.”

Together, we make an impact.

Stand in solidarity with Indigenous peoples for land rights, sustainable livelihoods, and cultural preservation.
