“IMPACT's support has been instrumental in strengthening the skills and knowledge of our community members.”

Alex Leseketeti

County Drought Coordinator | National Drought Management Authority | Samburu County, Kenya

A Land of Beauty and Challenges

Samburu is a beautiful land with wild animals, natural resources, and a good environment for the people. The people here are friendly to the environment, and as pastoralists, their livelihood depends on livestock. Therefore, the land is more communal.

Drought is a big issue in Kenya, and I have seen the challenges faced by our community. We have just recovered from a severe four-year drought. This is where IMPACT comes in.

Championing Water Policies and Environmental Stewardship

In northern Kenya, the major challenge is water. IMPACT is an organization that has been working in northern Kenya, particularly in Laikipia and Samburu. It focuses on climate change, environmental stewardship, land use, and water resource management.

IMPACT has been championing issues concerning water policies. When we have policies that provide us with clear direction, and IMPACT is involved in their development, we can better work alongside our partners and the community to move things forward with greater clarity and purpose. This kind of leadership is appreciated and offers valuable guidance for the economy.

Supporting Communities and Government Efforts

As the county drought coordinator at the National Drought Management Authority in Samburu County, I can confidently say that IMPACT has been vital in supporting our communities. They also fully complement government efforts to support climate-related policies.

IMPACT’s support has been instrumental in strengthening the skills and knowledge of our community members. Their work on land rights and natural resource management, capacity building, training, environmental awareness, lobbying, and human rights has empowered us. Without their support, our challenges would have been far greater.

IMPACT is truly everyone’s best friend in the county and pastoral communities.
